Hi, I'm Nobu and these are some of my favorite songs~a never ending mixtape. Dance, slam, chill...hell, click your fingers while kickin' back in the futon, if that's what you're into. And, YES, buy the music! Support the band! Liner notes, record jackets and smokey clubs ARE cool!

When did "emo" become emo?

The Hated
Less Than Nothing
What Was Behind LP
Vermin Scum 1992

The Hated was one of Daniel Littleton's pre-Ida bands, mid to late 80s. Out of Maryland, it's sort of surprising that they weren't lumped in with the rest of the Revolution Summer crowd (Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, Embrace, Dag Nasty, yeah yeah yeah...) being located so close to DC. Why no Dischord release? Who knows? Not being from DC, no original harDCore people from the early Dischord years...maybe they sucked live?

Does anyone want to send me their 7"?

Endnotes
1. What Was Behind was originally the No More We Cry demo from 1986, released posthumously in 92. Vermin Scum apparently pressed the LP at the wrong speed, slightly slower. I've fiddled around with the pitch control on my turntable - hey, maybe this is how this track is meant to be heard. If Troubleman ever releases the Hated discography in our lifetimes, maybe we'll figure it all out.
2. The Hated tribute page.
3. The Wrangler Brutes LP is pretty rocking. Japan tour next month!

We didn't suck live at all -- but we weren't in Ian's circle of friends, so although we played with those abnds a lot and Ian helped us book a tour, he didn't want us on the label. We were also a bit younger than those folks, and slightly too hippy.

Thanks for the comment!
I assume you were in the Hated?
A little story: this is like, early 90s or something, in Tokyo. I remember seeing a Hated record (Every Song?) at the local punk record shop, with the little post-it describing you guys, from the DC area, etc...me thinking, "A band from DC not on Dischord! They must suck!"

I was a stupid kid. Needless to say, I never did pick it up. Can't wait for the Troubleman release.

Thanks again.

P.S. I was fortunate enough to find the What Was Behind LP used a few years ago.

Yes, one of the Hated here. What Was Behind is a frustrating record for us because we had lost control over Vermin Scum records by then, and the guy who put that out never listened to the test pressings -- so it's at the wrong speed! The Troubleman release will fix this, or you can try to dig up one of the original casette releases of What Was Behind -- these have become stipdly rare, however.
